Berlin has received Prince of Asturias award for concord. Berlin’s nomination for the prize has in the eyes of the jury trumped those of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Spanish Jesuit Enrique Figaredo, who has worked in Cambodia since 1991 and has spent his life campaigning against antipersonnel landmines, and that of the Iranian-Canadian reporter Maziar Bahari.
On the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the jury wanted to draw attention “equally to those who lost their lives or liberty in the fight to overcome it, as well as to the millions of citizens who were capable of building, on the scars of a divided city, an open, welcoming, and creative society.” The jury considers Berlin to have been “a nexus for concord in the heart of Germany and Europe, which contributes to understanding, coexistence, justice, peace, and freedom in the world.”
